Flower Urn and Arch - Day One

To begin this wall mural, I lightly sanded the wall surface.  Then I drew the top of the pedestal, the bowl (urn) and the arch with vine charcoal.  I had to use very complicated instruments to get the arch and perspective lines drawn correctly - a piece of string and a thumb tack.

I started today by laying in a wash of Iron Oxide Red in the sky area.  Then, I painted the blue sky over that, allowing the red to peek through in places - especially on the bottom.  I think this is more visually exciting than just plain sky blue and gives it a more aged feel.

Next, I started the bowl and the pedestal - making sure to put the cast shadow under the the bowl.  I've included some of the surrounding area in this photograph, just so you could see the mural with a bit of context.  This is in the foyer area of a small theater/event room.  On either side of the mural are the entrances to the restrooms.
